What’s In Season
Take a look at What’s In Season this month at the Markets!
What’s In Season
There’s plenty of delicious autumn fruit around at the moment, especially citrus.
We’re still in a seasonal transition for vegetables, with growing regions shifting from the southern states up to the north.
As always at this time of year, some vegetables are in shorter supply, which is starting to be reflected in pricing.
FRUIT
APPLES & PEARS: All in season, with Red Nashis starting this week.
EXOTIC: A great selection of cold-weather exotics in season. Aussie pomegranates are still going strong. Both soft and crisp persimmons are available, and feijoas are in season too.
TROPICAL: Watermelon is great value right now, pineapples are tasting delicious, and rockmelons are a little harder to come by. Figs are starting to slow down.
CITRUS: Winter is peak citrus season, and it’s starting to show! Aussie navels are in top form, with Imperial mandarins also eating well. Easy-peel oranges and ruby grapefruit have arrived, cumquats are in season, and finger limes are available. Lemons are great value and yuzu lemons – a special Japanese citrus – are also around.
BERRIES: New-season QLD strawberries are here, raspberries are great value, and both blueberries and blackberries are becoming more plentiful.
VEGETABLES
Cold weather across growing regions is slowing produce growth and, as expected at this time of year, pushing prices up.
LOCAL & DIRECT FROM THE GROWER: Dutch Cream and Kipfler potatoes (organic/biodynamic) from Ingelera Farm, along with their organic pumpkin and garlic. Also available: local mushrooms and hydro lettuce.
TOMATOES: Prices are up due to cooler growing conditions, but should ease soon.
ASPARAGUS: Currently imported only.
BEANS & PEAS: Round beans are of great quality but are in short supply. Brussels sprouts are good quality, too, but not in abundance.
CORN: Very limited supply at the moment.
AVOCADO: Shepherds are in season. Hass avocados are better value this week.
RECOMMENDED / GOOD VALUE: Zucchini, leeks, sweet and flavourful local organic pumpkin, Aussie garlic, bunched veg like spinach and Tuscan kale.
TRUFFLES: Local truffle season is here!
FLOWERS: In-season blooms include poppies, jonquils, hyacinths, proteas, and wax flowers. A burst of colour to brighten up winter days.
